Book Review

In my book I read, Someone Like You, there were three main characters. They were Halley, Scarlett, and Halley’s mom. Each of them had their own role in the story and I have certain awards for each of them.
To start out with, Scarlett is awarded “Best Personal Strength.” Scarlett deserves this award because she went through some pretty rough things for being a teenager. At the beginning of the book, Scarlett’s boyfriend Michael Sherwood gets killed in a motorcycle accident. This breaks her heart and is very upset about it, but she handles it very well. When she went to Michael’s funeral she showed personal strength when her classmates were saying mean stuff to her about seeing him over the summer. She just kept walking by them and didn’t let them upset her. A few weeks after Michael dies, Scarlett finds out she is pregnant with his baby. Scarlett takes the situation on very well. Her mother thinks it is a bad idea to keep the baby since she is so young, but Scarlett says she will take on full responsibility for the baby. This showed me personal strength because it shows that Scarlett believes in herself so much that she can take care of a baby at the same time she is taking care of herself as she finishes up high school.
Next, I would give Halley the award for “Best Friend” The first reason why I would give this award to her would be because she left her summer camp early to go home to support her best friend Scarlett when Michael Sherwood died. Halley didn’t care what anybody said because she knew she had to be there for her friend during this difficult time. When Scarlett had to go to the doctor’s office to figure out what was going to happen with the baby, Halley got out of school early to be there for Scarlett. Even though she had to miss a few tests and she would have to make up work from the material she was missing, she felt her best friend was her first priority. Throughout the story, a new boy comes into Halley’s life, Macon Faulkner. Macon always wants to hang out with Halley, but she makes sure to tell him she can’t because she needs to be there for her friend. This showed me how much respect she has for Scarlett. I was impressed on how she out her best friend before a boy because a lot of girls have a hard time doing that. Throughout the whole story, Halley is by Scarlett’s side the whole time.
The last award I would give would be “Most Supportive.” This award would go to Halley’s mom. Although there are many points in the story when Halley’s mom is very strict, I feel it is necessary because she just wants her daughter to be safe and happy. She is a therapist, so she has really good advice she gives to Halley. She always let Halley talk to her about things happening in her life whether it was about her best friend or her new boyfriend. Through good times and bad Halley’s mom was always there to lead her in the right direction. I feel Halley’s mother’s actions helped avoid Halley from making bad choices.
Overall, in the novel I read, Someone Like You, the three main characters: Halley, Scarlett, and Halley’s mom deserved awards. All these awards were for something that really helped each and every one of them through the challenges everyone was facing.
